Breast Uplift

Breast uplift, also known as mastopexy, lifts and reshapes sagging breasts to give a firmer, more pert and youthful bust. It’s a rewarding operation because it allows you to regain the former youthful shape and size of your breasts, which helps restore body confidence and self-esteem. You gain freedom in clothes you want to wear – you can once again wear tops without a bra, and access a wider range of fashions.

Occasionally Breast uplift is combined with breast implants or with fat grafting, either to enlarge the breast, or just simply restore the volume that has been lost with age, childbirth or breastfeeding. Women who’ve had children often have breast uplift surgery at the same time as a “tummy-tuck” procedure, to get back their pre-kids body in an overall “mummy makeover”.

There are various different types of breast uplift surgery, and I can advise you on what best suits you, in a no-obligation consultation.

Women choose breast uplift for very personal reasons, which may include

  • Low-lying nipples and emptiness in the upper part of the breast.
  • “Deflation” of the breast after children or weight loss
Loss of skin elasticity causing sagging and breast droop.
  • Loss cleavage and breast pertness
  • Restricted choice of clothing
  • Difficulty wearing clothes without the support of a bra
  • Embarrassment and avoidance wearing swimwear at the pool or on holidays
  • Low self-esteem affecting intimacy with their partner.

The benefits of surgery

  • Improved body confidence and self-esteem.
  • Easier to find clothes that fit well.
  • The ability to wear a wider range of clothes such as low cut dresses.
  • Breast uplift or mastopexy is performed under general anaesthetic (asleep) and takes 1-2 hours
Day surgery or one night in hospital.
  • There are several different types of breast uplift (mastopexy). The best one for you depends on the position of your nipple and how much excess skin you have. The techniques of mastopexy offered include:
    – Circum-areolar (circle scar around the nipple)
    – Vertical scar (lollipop shaped scar)
    – Wise pattern (anchor shaped scar) techniques.
  • Excess skin is removed, the nipple is up-lifted and the breast is re-shaped.
  • Uplift may be combined with breast imlants.
  • All stitches used are absorbable, so no stitches need removing.
  • Any discomfort should be easily controlled with over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol.
  • Mr West will see you in clinic just over one week after the operation to make sure everything is going well.
  • You should wear a soft supportive sports bra (no underwired bras) 24/7 for 6 weeks after the operation.
  • Gradual recovery over 6 weeks. You will be up and about within a day, but your breasts may ache occasionally for a couple of weeks. Return to light work and social activities after 2 weeks, longer if your work is very active or physical. Avoid lifting or pushing anything heavy for three or four weeks. Typically it’s 6 weeks before you’re stamina returns and you can return to full exercise.
  • Women are usually delighted with their new look of their firmer, uplifted, more youthful looking breasts. The breasts are lifted high initially, anticipating that over the next 6 months your breasts gradually relax and settle into their new natural shape. It’s therefore a few moths after surgery before you can see the final result.
  • The scars will depend upon the type of breast uplift surgery you have (circum-areolar / vertical scar / wise pattern mastopexy), but generally given 6-12 months for the scars to pale and soften they become inconspicuous. Most people wouldn’t notice the scars unless they know what to look for.
  • All women have slight differences between the breast on each side, and the same is true after uplift surgery. Any differences are minor and shouldn’t be obvious.
  • It is usual for the nipple to feel numb after surgery, since the breast uplift procedure lifts the nipple to a higher position, and this may be permanent.
  • Breast uplift surgery is generally regarded as a permanent solution to remove excess sagging skin from the breasts. However over the long term, ageing, weight change and pregnancy will still affect the appearance of your breasts.
  • If you plan to have children in the future, but you want to maintain the good results of breast uplift for the longer term, you might consider deferring uplift surgery until after your family is complete. Future breast-feeding may not be possible, since the surgery may divide many of the milk ducts leading to the nipples.
