Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, technically known as reduction mammoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to reduce and uplift the breasts to give you smaller, lighter and naturally shaped breasts. In addition, you can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple The goal is a more comfortable bust, of a size in proportion with the rest of your body.

I understand that excessive size and weight of the breast causes neck, back and shoulder pain, a stooped posture and cutting-in of bra straps. It can be difficult to get clothing to fit well, and can stop you exercising, swimming or going to the gym. Overly large breasts also attract unwanted attention, ogling eyes and unwelcome comments. This makes a woman feel extremely self-conscious such that sometimes they just want to cover up in baggy clothes.

Breast reduction surgery is suitable nearly all women with a large bust. Surgery is tailored specifically to the size and shape of your breasts, and to the size you want to be.
Women with a large bust often find the excessive weight causes their breasts to be saggy with large stretched areolas (the darker skin around the nipple). Some women get rashes and infections of the skin under the breast. Breast reduction creates more attractive and youthful looking breasts that are uplifted, naturally shaped with smaller areolas. If you’ve noticed a difference in size or shape between your breasts, a reduction can also even them up and improve symmetry.
Breast reduction will make your body will look better proportioned and clothes will fit better. Women tend to walk taller, sit up straighter and feel better about who they are. The dramatic improvement in appearance motivates many to be healthier and exercise more, so any remaining excess weight usually comes off shortly thereafter.
Most women having a breast reduction have tried dieting to reduce their breast size, but often describe how weight comes off from everywhere else and just makes the bust look even bigger. With large breasts it can be very difficult to exercise or go to the gym, but you’ll get a better result if you can keep the weight off before and after surgery.

Breast reduction surgery takes between two to four hours under general anaesthetic (asleep).
One night (occasionally two nights) stay in hospital afterwards.
During the procedure fat, breast tissue and skin are removed. The breasts are then reshaped and the nipples uplifted.
A small tube drain is placed on the side of each breast, which will simply be slid out after the first day or two.
All stitches used are absorbable, so no stitches need removing.
Any discomfort should be easily controlled with over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol.
I’ll see you in clinic just over one week after the operation to make sure everything is going well.
You should wear a soft supportive sports bra (no underwired bras) 24/7 for 6 weeks after the operation.
Gradual recovery over 6 weeks. You will be up and about within a day, but your breasts may ache occasionally for a couple of weeks. Return to light work and social activities after 2 weeks, longer if your work is very active or physical. Avoid lifting or pushing anything heavy for three or four weeks. Typically it’s 6 weeks before you’re stamina returns and you can return to full exercise.

Women are usually delighted with their new look, and released from the restrictions of excessively large breasts, they see an immediate improvement in their quality of life. However long you’ve wanted these changes though, you will need time to adjust to the new you.
The scars typically follow an anchor-shaped pattern that circles the areola, extends downward below it, and follows the crease beneath the breast. The scars gradually become pale and soft and inconspicuous such that between 6-12 months after surgery the scars are barely noticeable other than to those who know what to look for.
Breast reduction aims to reduce breast volume but cannot guarantee an exact bra cup size. It takes between 6 months to a year for your breasts settle into their new shape before you can see the final result. Initially the breasts are lifted high, anticipating that with time, as the scars mature and soften, the breast will relax into a natural shape.
Before surgery there are always slight differences in size and shape between the breasts, and reduction surgery can help even them up. After surgery there may still be small discrepancies between the two sides, but any differences should be minor.
Breast reduction surgery is regarded as a permanent solution to overly large breasts. However, even after surgery your breasts shape and size may change in response to your hormonal shifts, ageing, any weight change, or pregnancies. It is possible to have a breast reduction before children, but to maintain the good results over the longer term ideally your weight should be stable and your family should be complete. Future breast-feeding may not be possible, since the surgery may divide many of the milk ducts leading to the nipples.
It is usual for the nipple to feel numb after surgery, since the breast reduction procedure lifts the nipple to a higher position, and this may be permanent.
