Inverted Nipples

Inverted nipples are quite common, affecting both men and women, but for many people its very embarrassing problem. Fortunately correction of inverted nipples is relatively quick and simple procedure that you can have done under local anaesthetic within about an hour.

Some people have nipples that are sometimes “in” and sometimes “out,” and if this is the case you should first try out a non-surgical correction technique, such as the niplette device. However, if your nipples are always retracted within the breast it is likely that surgery will be the only way to properly correct the problem. The procedure is very straight-forward, leaves minimal scarring and recovery is very quick, but it does mean that you probably won’t be able to breastfeed afterward. So if breastfeeding is important to you, defer the procedure until your family is complete.

It’s a minor procedure, performed under local anaesthetic, that takes just 15 minutes for each nipple.
I specialize in a simple technique which releases the nipple by dividing the tight ducts that pull the nipple inwards. Stitches are then placed at the base of the nipple to hold it in a good position whilst it is heals.
A short scar is hidden on the side of the nipple, and all the stitches are dissolving so don’t need removing.
You can return to work the next day. Any discomfort should be mild, and eased with paracetamol.
There is a dressing to protect the nipple which you can remove after one week, when things should be near fully healed. There may be some scabbling, swelling or bruising that settled over a few weeks.

Women are usually delighted with their new look of their breasts, with a “normal” nipple that stands proud and points outwards.
Once everything settles, it shouldn’t be possible to tell that you’ve had a procedure, nor that the nipple was ever inverted.
The procedure provides a very successful permanent correction for the majority. Over time, some women find the nipple loses some of its prominence, but it’s less common that the nipple retracts again.
Sensation is usually unchanged, although some women describe slight alteration of the feeling in the nipple, and the nipples should still respond normally to cold and touch.
It’s usually not possible to breastfeed following this procedure, so if you are planning to have a family you should consider very carefully whether you want to breastfeed.
