Liposuction, sometimes referred to as “lipo,” “Liposculpture” or “body contouring” is designed to reshape specific areas of your body by removing excess fat deposits. This improves your body contours and, whilst it doesn’t reduce your weight significantly, it can have a slimming effect on your figure. The results are far more predictable, consistent and long-lasting than any non-invasive treatments that claim to reduce or tighten fat bulges.

Liposuction can be performed on any area your body, and may be used on several different areas in a single procedure. Often it’s combined with other cosmetic procedures such as tummy tuck, breast reduction, arm lift or thigh lift. I use state of the art “Body-Jet” Water-jet Assisted Liposuction (WAL) technology that is gentle, whilst maximising the amount of fat removed and encouraging optimal healing.

Liposuction is ideal for reducing stubborn fat bulges that won’t shift with diet or exercise. Often these bulges are just a family trait and a normal part of your personal body shape, but they can make you self-conscious and undermine your confidence. By targeting specific well-defined deposits of fat, clothes may fit better, your figure will be more in proportion, and this can sometimes give the appearance of weight loss. Overall this leads to improved body confidence.

Typical problem areas that can be re-shaped with liposuction include:

  • Arms & Thighs
  • Hips & buttocks
  • Stomach (Abdomen) & waist
  • Chest area
  • Cheeks, chin and neck
  • Knees
  • Calves and ankles

There are many personal reasons why people choose to have liposuction surgery:

  • Stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise
  • A disproportionate figure – such as your hips being out of proportion with your waist and thighs
  • Self-conscious and embarrassment over a certain part of your body

The potential benefits of liposuction:

  • Increased self confidence
  • Motivation to pursue a healthier lifestyle
  • Ability to have wider choice of clothes
  • Feel more in proportion

Bear in mind, however, that liposuction is not designed to be a quick weight loss tool, and it won’t substitute for proper diet and exercise. Nor is liposuction effective for treating cellulite or any areas of the body where the actual problem is loose sagging skin.

  • Liposuction is usually performed either under general anaesthetic (asleep) and takes between one to two hours depending on the number of areas being treated.
  • Usually it’s a day case procedure, so you can go home on the same day, and won’t need to stay in hospital overnight.
  • Before the procedure I will visit you in your room and draw marks around the areas to be treated.
  • Liposuction is performed through several small incisions, which leave inconspicuous scars, each about 0.5cm long.
  • The fat beneath the skin is sucked out using a fine tube called a cannula. I typically uses Body-Jet water-jet assisted liposuction (WAL) technology. This is gentle on the body tissues whilst maximising the amount of fat removed, and allows for excellent aesthetic results, minimal risks and a fast healing process.
  • Dilute local anesthesia is infused to ensure there is no discomfort at the end of the procedure
You will need to wear an elasticated compression garment for 6 weeks afterwards to smooth and compress the skin to your new body contours.
  • Swelling, bruising of to the areas treated should subside within two to three weeks. Any discomfort should be easily controlled with simple alagesia such as paracetamol.
  • All stitches are dissolving and don’t need removal.
  • You can return to work and normal activities after on to two weeks.
  • Mr West will review you in clinic six weeks after surgery when you can see your new figure.
  • Your new improved smoother body contours will be evident about six weeks afterwards, when any swelling should have settled.
  • The reshaping tends to be far more apparent and discernable than any non-invasive treatments you may have tried, and the results more reliable and long-lasting.
  • One treatment should be all you need to reshape problem areas, but in some situations a second procedure may be required to achieve optimal results and get complete satisfaction.
  • As your body ages, it is natural to lose some firmness, but most of your improvement should be relatively permanent. Any change in your weight may affect the result and change the shape of your body contour.
